Pallas Projects/Studios are pleased to present Banbha McCann—Domestic Bliss, the sixth exhibition of our 2023 Artist-Initiated Projects programme.

Domestic Bliss reflects on the desire for a home, and how to make one.

The work in this exhibition blurs the lines between the personal and universal, image and object, memory and desire.

Paintings of domestic interiors are sourced from the collective memory and imagination; the aspirational homes of Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire. Textiles and sculptures juxtapose the canon of modern design with childhood memories of life in a bedsit, where objects take on the role of an entire room; the tv, the microwave, and the bed, the potted plant as a garden.

These real and imagined places and objects describe the places we live, and the home we carry around in our heads.

Biography

Banbha McCann’s practice combines painting, sculpture and architecture to examine the memories, expectations and desires held in objects and spaces, from the private and humble to the public and grandiose. Her work draws from film and design for their ability to encapsulate desire and fantasy, which combine in the narratives of McCann’s installations with lived experience and personal encounter.

Banbha is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, Creative Ireland and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. Her works are in private and public collections including the OPW and the Arts Council of Ireland Collection.
