In the making presents a taste of the future. For three weeks in February 2023, Pallas Projects provides an exciting platform for emerging art practices, hosting three consecutive exhibitions of new work by degree year students from IADT’s BA in Art. Conceived as an experiment in learning through exhibition-making, the project has been developed with guidance from PP/S co-curator Gavin Murphy and assistance from post-graduate students on IADT’s MA in Art & Research Collaboration (ARC). Each exhibition will provide an early-stage glimpse into the ideas, materials and techniques currently being researched and tested by the BA students and a valuable opportunity for them to extend their practices beyond the IADT studios.
In the making is conceived in three instalments, titled Milk, Butter, and Bread. A series of invited respondents have been asked to engage with a specific instalment and will be in conversation with IADT students as part of the exhibition’s public programme.
The three exhibition openings will take place from 6pm to 8pm, on Thursdays 9, 16 and 23 February 2023.
Each exhibition will also be open to the public on Fridays, 12–6pm, and Saturdays, 12–2pm. (Please note the earlier Saturday closing time).
Exhibition events: Each Friday at 2.30pm invited guests will respond to the exhibition in conversation with IADT students. This informal event is open to the public.Please see below for details.

Milk brings together the work of degree year students from IADT’s BA in Art in the first of three exhibitions at Pallas Projects in February 2023.
Milk explores the mechanics of our physical and mental relations with the natural world. Milk itself is representative of the natural production and growth created to produce life. It is a culmination of the natural flow conceptually and literally that we see internally and in external attitudes towards organic form. Its fluidity is intertwined in life even after being grown, using energy to build physical form. Milk is the bridge between nature and nurture.

Butter brings together the work of degree year students from IADT’s BA in Art in the second of three exhibitions at Pallas Projects in February 2023.
Butter is concerned with the emotional aspects of art and its making. Several works in the exhibition focus on capturing and immortalising a moment. Other artworks take a more experiential approach, communicating a particular physical feeling or emotion to the viewer. Some of the artists tackle the materiality of their chosen medium, exploring how matter can be used to convey memories, emotions and stories.

Bread brings together the work of degree year students from IADT’s BA in Art in the third of three exhibitions at Pallas Projects in February 2023.
Bread investigates themes of voyeurism, housing and streets through a collection of films, sculptures, and paintings, by artists pushing and challenging the limits of the materiality of their chosen medium. The works in this exhibition address the broad scope of individual human experience as it intersects with the structure and confines of society, architecture and the mind.

Biographies of the invited respondents
Exhibition event In the making 1: Milk
Michael Hill is Programme Curator at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, Dublin, and half of the TBG+S Curatorial Team (with Clíodhna Shaffrey) representing Ireland at the 59th Venice Biennale 2022 with artist Niamh O’Malley. He works on an occasional publishing and graphic design project, 100 Years Ago Today, that includes books, postcards and music releases.
Exhibition event In the making 2: Butter
DIVA is a new art gallery and teaching space located at Mellifont Avenue in the middle of Dún Laoghaire, run and created by Annie Laing and Tilly Morris. Annie and Tilly, both past IADT students and artists who specialise in painting and sculpture, opened DIVA this past summer with the aim of supporting young and emerging artists in Ireland. DIVA offers a variety of opportunities, facilities and resources for the benefit of the creative community, such as affordable gallery space available for rent by students, bi-annual open call exhibitions, workroom hire for artists or freelance creative businesses, art classes and workshops for children, artist studio rental, art library access for thesis research and much more. Both easily accessible and accommodating, DIVA helps to support emerging artists through a unique commission free exhibition scheme, offering the chance for students to independently showcase and sell artwork. Artists can learn in a practical way more about the inner workings, production and curating challenges of professional exhibitions.
Exhibition event In the making 3: Bread
Emma Roche is the 2021 recipient of The EMERGENCE Award, Wexford Arts Centre; Visual Arts, Arts Council Bursary Award, 2021 and 2020, Creative Ireland Bursary Award, 2020 and was shortlisted for the Zurich Portrait Prize, National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, 2021. She has recently been selected for a residency at the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts, New York, 2023. Recent exhibitions include Spiders and Cheerleaders, The Complex, Dublin, Ochre, two-person show with Ciara Roche at Wexford Arts Centre, 2021 and Forward Slash at the LAB Gallery Dublin, 2018. Selected group shows include Generation ‘22, Butler Gallery, 2022, We Are Fetishists, Small Night Zine, Garter Lane, Waterford, 2022, Artworks, VISUAL Carlow, 2020 and 2019, Women Can’t Paint, Turps Gallery, London, 2018 and New Beginnings, Green On Red Gallery, Dublin, 2018.
