It's All Going To Be Ok Pt.2

Charlie’s Pov:

I sit and play with my hands as I wait for him to come back over to me.

“She’s in great hands sir. Don’t worry,” James says as he sits down next to me.

“Is there anyone you can call to be here with you?” he asks and I shrug, but then Owen comes to mind.

“I think our friend is in town so I can ask him,” I say and he nods before grabbing a pen.

“Ok. Well, you may want to call him when we're done here,” he says and I nod.

“So, can you tell me what happened so we can try and figure out what’s wrong?” he asks and I take a deep breath.

“She’s on her period….” I say and trail off to think.

“Does she normally have symptoms like this?” he asks and I shake my head no.

“I mean she always gets really bad ones, but this has been the worst so far,” I say and he nods as he makes a note.

“I came home and she was having bad cramps, then she showered but was feeling nauseous so she had to get out,” I explain and he nods.

“Is she always nauseous?” he asks and I nod.

“Mostly, yes. After she got out she slept a little more and I went to do something while she was sleeping. Then she came into my office and she was fine then…” I say with a gulp before trailing off and he nods as he continues to write.

“What happened next?” he asks and I let out a puff of air.

“She said she had to go to the bathroom and when she walked out of our en suite, she sat on the edge of our bed. She told me her heart felt like it was going to beat out of her chest,” I say and tears come to my eyes now as the scene replays in my head.

“Ok. That’s when she passed out?” he asks and I shake my head no.

“She uhh…decided to lay down… she got up off the edge of the bed and uhh… didn’t even make it four feet before passing out,” I say as I choke back my tears as everything starts to hit me.

“Ok. Sir, I think I know what’s going on. One more question: how much food has she eaten?” he asks and I rub my face.

“Umm… not much. She, uhh, never really has an appetite on her first day of her period…” I say and he nods.

“Ok. Why don’t you call your friend up and I’ll come get you in a bit,” he says and I nod at him.

He then hurries off and I sigh as everything starts to finally really hit me. I rub my face, trying to compose myself before pulling my phone out to call Owen.

“Hey man! What’s up? I thought you and Y/n didn’t wanna meet up till tomorrow?” Owen says as he answers the phone.

“Hey, O. Umm… could you come down to the emergency room?” I say as I swallow, holding back more tears.

“Yeah, sure, man. I’ll be there in like ten,” he says and I nod, but realize he can’t see me.

“Ok. Thanks,” I say.

“Anytime. See you soon, buddy,” he says, getting ready to hang up.

“See you soon,” I say back before I hang up.

I anxiously sit for a few more minutes, just bouncing my leg till James comes back.

“Hey. You ready to come back?” he asks and I nod as I stand up from my chair.

“My friend should be here in a few minutes,” I say and he waves a dismissive hand at me.

“Guinevere can watch for him. Here, let’s show her a photo,” he says and we walk up to the receptionist desk.

“Guinevere darling! Can you watch out for this man's friend? He’d like to go sit with his wife,” James says as he leans against the counter.

“Of course, dear! Just show me a picture and I’ll send them back when they get here,” she says and I nod, opening my phone and quickly finding a picture of Owen.

“Ok. Got him. Go be with your wife,” she says with a light smile and I give a small one back.

“Ok. Follow me. I believe I’ve figured out the cause. We just need to run a few more tests to be sure,” James says as he leads me back to where she is.

We walk into the back and he moves a curtain aside for me to step though. Once I do, I see my wife laying on the bed so peacefully I almost think she’s not breathing till I see her chest rise.

“Ok. You can sit right here and Guinevere will bring your friend back when he gets here,” James says and he pulls over a chair for me.

“Thank you,” I say as I sit down right next to her.

“Ok. I’ve got one more test to go run, but I’ll be back shortly,” James says as I nod before he walks off and out the door again.

“Come on baby girl, wake up,” I say as I hold her hand in mine and kiss it.

I watch her closely for a few minutes before there’s a knock at the door, making me turn to see Owen coming in. As he walks in, he lets out a small gasp before coming all the way over by me.

“Hey buddy. What happened?” he asks in a stunned tone as he puts a hand on my shoulder.

“I don’t know. One minute she was fine, the next she’s collapsing into my arms,” I say anxiously before I sniffle and he pats my shoulder.

“I’m sure everything is ok. She’s a fighter no matter what this is,” he says and I nod as I continue to just stare at her.

“Don’t do that, man,” he says, making my head turn to him.

“Don’t do what?” I ask in an uneasy tone and he now pulls over another chair from the corner.

He pulls the chair right up next to mine and sighs before shaking his head at me. There's a silence that falls over the room for a while before Owen starts to talk.

“Dude. I know you're going straight to the worst in your head. Probably even blaming yourself. When the reality of it is, it's not at all your fault. I bet you she’ll be perfectly ok and it’ll be a minor little thing,” he says in a comforting tone and I sigh as I turn back to her.

“But O... what if it’s not minor and she’s really sick? I should have seen it sooner,” I say, unable to hide the melancholy in my voice as tears fall down my face.

“Man, you can’t think that way. You’ll only keep scaring yourself before you even know what’s going on. Just wait till you know something is actually wrong,” he says in a soothing tone and I nod again before I wipe away my tears.

“You're right, O. Thanks buddy,” I say and he claps me on the shoulder again.

“Anytime, buddy. Anytime,” he says and another silence, almost eerie this time, falls over the room.

We sit there in silence for a while before we hear another knock on the door, making us turn to see who it is. James smiles as he comes in, making me feel a little better.

“So Mr. Gillespie, I think I figured out why your wife fainted,” he says in a satisfied tone as he looks at his clipboard and I nod.

“Will she be ok?” I ask apprehensively and he nods.

“She’ll be good as new once we get some iron in her. Sir, your wife has an iron deficiency which makes her anemic,” he says optimistically and I let out a sigh as Owen pats my shoulder.

“See, man. I told you she’d be fine,” Owen says and I nod at him.

“So why do you think she passed out?” I ask and James shrugs.

“Well, to me it looks like she’s had the iron deficiency for a while. Do you happen to know if she has iron supplements? It could possibly be in a pill or even drops,” he says, but I don’t reply out of shock.

“Well, judging by his face I’m betting he has no clue,” Owen says in a humorous tone as he chuckles. James nods before looking over his chart again.

“Well I’m sure she’s been on meds for it before. I looked up her medical history and it definitely shows it. So honestly, she could have just ran out and didn’t get any more, or likely just forgot to take it,” James points out as he now walks over to her.

He opens her eye lid and shines a light into it, then puts the light back into his shirt pocket. He lets out a hum and smiles over at me.

“She’ll be perfectly fine. I asked Guinevere to bring us some iron in a drip. Once she gets a good amount in her, she should wake right up,” James assures me as he comes back around the bed to us.

“What are ways to make sure this doesn’t happen again?” Owen asks for me, seeing as now I’m just staring at her wondering why she has never said anything about it.

“Well, food with iron is good. That’s probably another reason for it. Her iron levels were probably already pretty low, then not eating on top of that, and she’s bleeding which also cleans iron out,” he says and Owen nods with his arms crossed.

“There’s many ways you can make sure she gets her daily iron. Food, the supplements that she was put on, and just checking in on her. I do know some of the other patients I’ve had with this in the past just completely forgot to take their supplements a couple times,” James says before there’s another knock on the door.

“Ahh! Guinevere! Do you have the iron drip?” James asks and she nods.

“Right here,” she says as she hands it over to him.

“Thank you, dear. I appreciate it,” James says as he takes it and starts to set it up.

“You're very welcome James,” she says before she leaves the room.

“She should wake up soon. When she does, one of you come get me, ok?” James says as he puts the needle into her hand.

“Ok. We’ll do that, thank you,” Owen says as I keep my eyes on her as James nods his head at Owen and walks out of the room.

“See, she’s going to be fine, Char,” Owen says in a consoling tone as he puts a hand on my shoulder.

~A Few Hours Later~

“Charlie… man. You should get some sleep. Don’t worry, she’ll wake up soon,” Owen says after stretching out in his chair.

“I’m going to be right here when she wakes up. I’m not leaving her side, O,” I say in a determined tone with a shake of my head and he sighs.

“Fine. If you won’t nap, I will. I’ll be over here on this couch. Wake me if you need anything,” Owen says as he spreads out on the tiny couch in the corner.

I sit with her as the IV drips slowly into her arm and every minute that it takes is like forever passing by. I hold onto her hand and soon I find myself laying my head down on her stomach. I rub her hand until my eyes close and I’m whisked away into the dream world.

Y/n’s Pov:

I wake up to a rhythmic sound of beeps, making me confused as I open my eyes slowly, blinking away some of the drowsiness I feel. After my eyes adjust to the light, I look around at the white sterile room before coming to the conclusion that I must be in the hospital. I continue to look around and soon my eyes fall on Owen over on the small couch in the corner.

I start to try and move only to find a weight holding me down. Looking down, I smile when I see Charlie cuddled up to me as he holds my hand. I pick up my other hand that seems to have an IV attached to it and start to play with Charlie’s hair.

I play with his long strands for a while before he starts to stir from his sleep. He rubs his eyes before looking up at me and his eyes widen.

“Baby! You're awake. I’m so glad you're awake,” he says loudly and I smile tiredly at him.

“Hmm. What’s going on?” Owen says as he too sits up and rubs his eyes.

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to wake you,” I say to Owen with a hoarse voice and he chuckles.

“Nope. You didn’t wake me. The doofus did,” Owen says as he shakes his head.

“I’ll leave you guys and go get your nurse,” Owen says, and I send him a light smile before he walks out of my room.

“How are you feeling, baby?” Charlie immediately asks and I giggle lightly.

“Babe. I feel fine, and shouldn’t the nurse ask me that?” I say and he sighs, making me frown.

“Honey. Really, I feel fine,” I say as I reach out and grab his hand.

“You really scared me,” Charlie whispers out and I reach out to wipe the tear that falls.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. I don’t know what happened,” I say apologetically and he looks up at me in shock.

“You don’t know what happened?” he says in a harsh tone that I’ve never heard from him before.

“Really, my love. I have no clue,” I say and he scoffs while shaking his head before Owen walks back in with another man at his side.

“Hello, Mrs. Gillespie. It’s good to see you awake. I’m James, your nurse. How are you feeling?” James asks and I smile lightly at him.

“Hi, nice to meet you James. I actually feel fine. A little drowsy, but perfectly fine,” I respond and James grins at me.

“That’s good. Must mean the iron worked,” James says as he looks over at the IV bag.

“Umm, if you don’t mind me asking... why am I here?” I say sheepishly.

“Oh. Of course not. Ma’am, you had a very low iron count, making me believe you may be anemic, but I take it you already know that,” James says and I look at Charlie, who’s got his arms crossed as he looks out the window.

“Umm…” I say as I bite my lip and nod.

“Yeah. I knew. I was told by a doctor maybe nine or ten years ago,” I say and Charlie shakes his head.

“Ok. Well do you know what happened then? I think maybe you just forgot to take your meds for it?” James asks and I nod my head.

“I did, but my doctor told me that if I was eating well I didn't have to take them much. So recently I stopped for a while because I’ve been eating very well,” I say and James nods at me.

“Well your husband told me you don’t normally eat on the first day of your period?” James asks and again I nod.

“Yeah. I don’t normally have an appetite on those days and I just usually try to sleep through the pain of my cramps,” I say and James nods as he now crosses his arms.

“Well I think on those days it’s best you take your supplements. Because not only are you not getting iron through food, but you also are bleeding a lot of it out at that time,” James says and I nod.

“Of course, thank you. I promise I’ll start taking them when I need them again,” I say with a small smile at James who nods.

“I’m going to say you need one more bag of this iron IV supplement, then you're good to go home, ok?” James says and I smile at him.

“Thank you James,” I say and he nods at me.

“I’m going to go get the second bag. I’ll be right back,” James says before walking out of the room.

“I’ll umm… uhh… be right back. I’m going to go get a snack…” Owen says before looking at me and I give him a small look of thanks before he walks out of the room.

“Charlie…?” I say quietly after a few moments of silence pass.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Charlie says just as quietly as he looks down.

“I…I…I thought I had it under control. I uhh… I don’t have a good past when it comes to telling others either…” I say as tears well up at the memories of my last relationship before Charlie.

“Did I do something to make you think you couldn’t trust me?” he asks with hurt evident in his voice and I shake my head.

“Oh no. Charlie, it was never your fault. Listen, my ex before you… he wasn’t 100% good to me. I mean he was at first, then he found out about it and he used it as his excuse to be pure evil…” I say and he sighs as he walks over and sits down next to me again.

“But what made you think I’d be anywhere near him?” Charlie asks and I sigh again.

“Charlie, it's a past trauma, babe. It’s always still messing with my head. It wasn’t anything you did, it's what he did. When he started being abusive because of it, I promised myself to handle it alone. Then you came and made me feel more loved then he ever did. I promise you when I say you did nothing wrong. I trust you so much,” I say and he shakes his head.

“You still didn’t tell me though,” he says and I grab his chin.

“Baby. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you, but it doesn’t mean I love you any less. You're still my hero,” I say as I pull his chin up so he’s looking at me.

“I’m right here baby,” I say in a serene tone as I see the tears build up in his eyes.

“I almost lost you. I was so scared,” Charlie says as he shakes his head before the tears start to fall.

“Oh baby. I’m so sorry. I’m here. I’m ok,” I say before pulling him up out of the chair and into a hug.

We sit there just hugging for a few minutes as he calms down from crying, and when he does I pull him farther onto the bed. I give him a kiss on the lips and he kisses me back for a minute before pulling away and resting his forehead to mine.

“I love you,” Charlie says with a light smile as I too smile at him.

“And I love you,” I say as I play with his hair for a moment.

He gives my forehead a few kisses that make me smile even more before I sink down so my head is on his chest. He cuddles me closer (if it's even possible) and once I feel his warmth envelop me, my eyes start to grow heavy only to close a few minutes later. Before I know it I’m drifting into a peaceful sleep feeling safe in my wonderful husband’s arms.

The End.
